Chapter 2.4 – But Still, the Sun Would Set

I decided to carry the longsword for self-defense.

I was worried after the dragon’s attack but also because it was lighter than I had imagined and not difficult to carry around. The thick blade and sheath are so oversized that it looks like I had wings. It also made me wonder if this sword is from another world. I’m not sure if it has the mysterious power from another world or not.

If there were dragons, then there must be magic so I shouldn’t stop thinking. Perhaps there was something I did wrong when I casted my “fireball” spell earlier. In mon-hun, there are monsters but no magic so I shouldn’t be too impatient. After all, we are in the mountains. We had to explore slowly.

The sun was setting and the sky was turning red.

I left my house in the morning and arrived at this house just before noon……even so, I think the sunset is a bit too early. Well, how can the sun’s behavior be exactly the same? The setting sun is probably a different celestial body compared to the sun I saw on Earth.

On the other side of the sky, a satellite I had never seen before—a moon with ring on it, was showing up. What the heck is that……

I was very curious but since there was no electricity, there was no light.

Which means we must eat before the sun goes down.

Returning to the living room, I opened some dog food for Chocola—it was something I got from the kitchen storage shelves—I took mine from my backpack.

My bento was filled with frozen food I had on hand. Shiso rolled chicken, spinach, shumai, tamagoyaki, and kinpira. After father died, I feel vague that I haven’t cooked much since I don’t have the energy to do so.

I grew up in a father-san household so it was my responsibility to cook. I am quite confident in my repertoire and skills. I can prepare this kind of menu by myself without using frozen foods.

「If I had the ingredients, that is. 」

There are probably no shiso, chicken, flour, eggs, burdock root, or green peas in this world. The only thing I could get was spinach because there were seeds in the warehouse.

Of course, cooking requires not only ingredients but also seasoning. In other words, seasonings and soup stock. We had a good amount of sugar, salt, soy sauce, mirin, pepper, etc. in the cupboard. However, there are no dried kelp or dried sardines.

The more I use them, the less I’ll have. Especially salt, which I will continue to consume as long as I live.

If we search in the mountains, can we find rock salt? If we can find something that looks like soybeans, can we make soy sauce or miso? Well, I found a book called “Recommendations for Fermented Foods” in the study upstairs……

Maa, I guess whatever will be, will be.

My immediate goal is to cultivate the field and successfully grow vegetables.

I should also verify the strength and reproducibility of the barrier that repelled the dragon.

And of course, explore the forest around this place to forage something to eat.

After that, if we can somehow get out of the forest and discover a human settlement, the path will be paved.

Let’s not imagine that we don’t know if we can understand the language or what if we run into some kind of head cutting barbarians, or that we might have been transferred to an extra savage mode world where humans don’t exist.

After eating, I took the empty bento and put it in a basket in the kitchen. In a survival situation, these containers can be very useful.

Meanwhile, the living room grows dimmer and dimmer. The sun has begun to completely set. With the curtains closed, it’s almost nighttime. Before I had to walk by hand, I went upstairs and went into the bedroom.

「As expected, no pajama」

I took off my windbreaker and threw it on the floor(I couldn’t find a hanger). The rest—I had come here with the intent of just hiking in the first place, so my clothes were a comfort fit shirt and trekking pants. Not much different than a jersey and I would have no problem sleeping in them. Perhaps I could think of this as hiking turned into camping.

「Alright, let’s go to bed.」

「Bark!」

When I got under the covers, Chocola jumped on the bed.

「Hey, you stay on the floor……no.」

「Bark!」

「It’s alright. I’ll sleep with you tonight.」

I lay down and avoided the corner of the bed, opening up a space.

I put my arm around Chocola, who is curled up there.

「Thanks」

「Bark?」

「I’m glad you’re here.」

Because.

Even though it is a night in a different world with no light, it’s warm and safe.

「Good night, Chocola」

「Kuun」

I close my eyes.

Was it because I was tired or because Chocola is here?

I quickly lost consciousness and fell deeply asleep, not even dreaming.

And the night has passed.

The sunlight peeking through the window curtains shone on my cheeks and I woke up.

I was surprised to realize that I must have slept for nearly twelve hours from sunset to dawn and I wondered in the corner of my mind how time flies. I went downstairs with Chocola and washed my face, thankful that water was running from the faucet. After opening the canned food and dog food and having breakfast, I opened the front door with my sword to see what’s going on outside.

「Hnn…….?」

I noticed something unusual.

Beyond the gate, just in front of the entrance.

It should have been sitting there and I was wondering how I was going to clean it up, pretending not to look at it that time—the corpse of the dragon.

It has completely disappeared in front of the gate.
