Chapter 25 – An Unexpected Opportunity?

「Me, a dragon slayer!?」

Gregory-san had come to the Adventurer’s Guild with a purpose—to apply for a certain quest. However, I never expected it would involve dragon extermination.

Moreover, Gregory-san seems to believe that I can defeat that dragon.

Certainly, that’s impossible.

My Dragon Tree Sword does indeed possess remarkable power. Furthermore, it’s made from the wood that grows on the remains of dragons, so I’m not entirely unfamiliar with dragons—though that’s more related to the creation of items. But when it comes to combat, I honestly don’t think I’d be of much use.

Especially if the opponent is a dragon with extraordinary combat abilities, you’d need considerable strength to face it.

While Gregory-san and Felix-san were discussing, I recalled the role of dragons within the Fantasy Farm Story game.

It is a slow life game but the word dragon exists, and they actually appear before players.

However, these in-game dragons serve as something akin to clients.

Players receive requests from dragons scattered throughout the world, who can communicate with humans. The task involves growing crops requested by the dragons and delivering them.

There are five types of dragons in the game, each specializing in a different attribute.

For instance, if it’s a Fire Dragon, completing their request rewards you with items or magic related to fire.

—And just as I remembered the game’s dragon mechanics, a thought crossed my mind.

Could this dragon also be approaching us with some kind of request?

It’s a faint hope, but to discern it, I’ll need more information from Felix-san.

「Um, Felix-san…」

「Yeah? What is it?」

「Regarding the dragon extermination… Is that dragon causing havoc or engaging in any wrongdoing?」

「It’s not quite like that. However—」

Felix-san proceeded to explain the events leading up to the dragon hunt.

According to the information, the dragon was sitting on a forest road north from here.

It remains stationary, not moving an inch.

While there haven’t been any direct attacks on people or tangible harm so far, the problem lies in the fact that this forest road is a crucial route connecting another major city to the town of Driessen. Naturally, no one would dare pass through a forest road where a live dragon lies.

While alternative routes are possible for round trips, they involve significant detours. If the dragon continues to remain immobile, the number of traders doing business in Driessen will steadily decline—ultimately leading to economic stagnation in the town.

This is likely what Gregory-san meant by 「You’re not entirely unaffected.」.

「…For us, it’s a matter of life and death.」

「Indeed. I’d like to take care of it promptly, but—」

「How about trying to persuade it?」

「「Persuade?」」

Gregory-san and Felix-san exchange glances.

Although the idea seems unexpected, the real question is

「Can persuasion work—or more importantly, can a dragon understand our words? 」

That’s the crux of the matter.

In the game, dragons appear randomly, and there are spots near Driessen where dragons interact with humans. However, it’s unclear whether those spots correspond to the forest road in question, and there’s no guarantee that it’s the same dragon.

In any case, the conclusion is that we won’t know until we see the dragon in person.

For now, I’ll inform Gregory-san that I’ll accompany him on the dragon hunt.

「Very well, please come back to the guild tomorrow morning.」

「Understood.」

So, we’ll be facing the dragon tomorrow… This is another opportunity.

If this dragon follows the same pattern as the in-game dragons, it should be intelligent and friendly toward humans rather than aggressive.

I’m getting a little excited to find out what kind of dragon it is!

…But before that, I need to have a thorough conversation with Gregory-san.

Attacking without proper understanding is out of the question.

Alright, things are getting interesting!
