Chapter 51 – Possibilities

Gregory-san was wrestling with a difficult issue.

It seemed that I held the key to solving it…but did a large-scale famine occur somewhere?

For now, I was led to the usual room and offered coffee as we began talking.

「About what we were discussing earlier…currently, a large bridge connecting this country to a neighboring one is being constructed.」

「Ah, for crossing the Bian River.」

「That’s correct.」

I see, I thought.

The Bian River was one of the largest rivers on the continent and could cause floods if it rained heavily. However, if a bridge was built across the river, it would reduce travel time to the neighboring city by more than half. That’s why the national project to construct a bridge had been underway for several years…but I heard that it had been postponed many times due to flooding and other issues with the river.

「Does this mean that the construction of the bridge is making progress?」 I asked.

「Yeah. We recently reached an agreement with the neighboring country to split the construction costs. Skilled craftsmen from both countries will be enlisted soon. Since we are a trading company, we won’t be directly involved in the construction work, but…」

「You were entrusted with the procurement of materials such as wood.」

「That’s right, but…there are a few problems with the procurement.」

So, he was discussing that problem with the person in charge.

But what was the problem, exactly?

「So, what’s the problem?」

「It seems that the trees we were planning to fell and turn into timber have got diseases…their strength has deteriorated significantly and they’re no longer usable.」

「Eehhh!?」

The situation seemed to be worse than I had initially thought.

「We requested help from a nearby village called Eva, where lumberjacks reside. They are now working to determine the cause and cure for the tree disease. …But, according to the report, the progress is not satisfactory.」

Gregory-san shrugs his shoulders.

This was a major national project, and if they could produce results, the reputation of the trading company would only rise. He must have been especially motivated for this reason.

So, he came to ask for my Dragon Tree Sword.

「Hmm…trees, huh?」

「Since you were living in a magnificent treehouse, I thought you were skilled in that area as well, not just vegetables.」

「……To be honest, I can’t confidently answer that.」

The treehouse where we lived was not created using the ability of the Dragon Tree Sword, it was born from a divine seed.

However, I could cure the diseases of the vegetables we grew. In fact, I could use that power in Fantasy Farm Story. Since there was Holy Water nearby, I didn’t need to demonstrate such power.

If I could apply that ability to trees, it would be a significant discovery. This would also correspond to what I had been trying to do, which was 「something that couldn’t be tried in the game world」.

It was worth trying.

「……Gregory-san.」

「Yeah?」

「Where is that village located?」

「What?! You’ll do it!?」

「I’m not sure if I can, but I’ll give it a try.」

「Thank you, Bale!」

It seemed that Gregory-san was relieved and grateful, clutching at straws for a solution. However, I hadn’t done anything yet. There was no guarantee that the results he was hoping for would come to fruition.

Although I had some concerns, well, let’s give it a try.

「Then, I’ll go pick you up tomorrow morning.」

「Understood.」

And so, my new challenge had begun.
