As I sat down in the chair, I noticed a pot of tea and a bowl of potato chips waiting on the table.
Whenever Haruki came over, Grandma always prepared some potato chips. She must have thought today’s guest was another one of my friends.
「These are homemade by my grandmother. Feel free to try some.」
The Guild Master picked up a chip and popped it into his mouth.
「This is… amazing.」
The words came from the depths of his soul. Without hesitation, he began devouring the chips one after another.
Watching his hands move with such speed, I was reminded that he really was an adventurer.
「Papa…」
Meanwhile, Dori tugged at my sleeve, clearly wanting some as well.
Since I grew the potatoes myself, there was no shortage of ingredients. Grandma, noticing Dori’s eager gaze, immediately headed back to the kitchen to fry up another batch of chips.
「Sorry, I couldn’t stop myself from eating so many.」
「No problem. Grandma’s potato chips are way better than anything you can buy in stores.」
「Flatter me all you want, you’re not getting anything extra!」
Despite her words, she kept frying and piling fresh chips onto the table with remarkable speed. Grandma’s culinary prowess never failed to impress me.
I picked up one of the freshly made chips to try it myself.
The moment I held it, I noticed how incredibly light it felt, and the delightful aroma hit me immediately.
This wasn’t just any potato chip.
Was this the effect of the potatoes I had grown?
The instant I bit into it, a perfect crunch resounded in my mouth, and a heavenly texture spread across my tongue. The rich, nutty flavor of the potato seemed to dance on my taste buds, making me want to get up and dance with it.
「What… is this?」
Though fried in oil, there was no greasy aftertaste. It was so light and crisp that I couldn’t help but reach for more, again and again.
It was dangerously good, the kind of snack you’d lose control over.
This was leagues beyond any potato chip I’d ever tasted in my life.
「Poteitoes!」
Dori, having finished her portion, carried her plate back to Grandma for a refill.
「Morita-san, who is your grandmother?」
「Well… she’s just a regular grandma. Or so I thought.」
Not only could Grandma read the feelings of a Mitsume Wolf, but she could also whip up delicious meals with ease. Her speed when making bentos had already amazed me, yet she continued to exceed all expectations.
『Kwuunnn!』
As if drawn by the lively atmosphere, the Mitsume Wolf approached us. Judging by its gaze, it seemed interested in the potato chips.
I wasn’t sure if it was safe to feed chips to a wolf-like monster, but since Dori—a fellow monster—had no issues eating them, it seemed okay.
「Wanna try one?」
I placed a plate of chips in front of the Mitsume Wolf. Without hesitation, it grabbed the whole plate in its mouth and trotted off.
Curious, I followed and found it offering the chips to its pregnant mate.
The mother wolf’s eyes lit up with delight as she nibbled on the snack.
「Want some more?」
At my question, both wolves eagerly nodded. I brought over another serving, but the mother wolf seemed to eat most of it, likely prioritizing nourishment for her unborn pups.
When I asked the Guild Master for his opinion, he suggested that the mother wolf’s heightened appetite might be due to her body’s increased demand for magic power during pregnancy.
「Don’t worry, there’s plenty left for you, too.」
I set out another plate for the father wolf, who looked back and forth between the dish and me, clearly hesitant.
「Better eat before Dori snatches it away.」
『Bark!?』
The Mitsume Wolf immediately began devouring the chips, clearly spurred by my teasing.
Let me reiterate—what this monster wolf was enthusiastically eating wasn’t meat, but potato chips.
After a while, their hunger satisfied, the two wolves curled up together on the blanket, dozing peacefully.
Looking at the scene, they could easily be mistaken for ordinary dogs.
At that moment, my decision was made.
「Todo-san, would it be okay if I looked after these two? I’ll use magic stones to meet the magic power needs.」
Even though I wasn’t a proper Tamer and lacked magic power, I could at least use magic stones to ensure they’d obey me for now.
That said, I hoped to never rely on such measures. If I ever had to use the collar’s power, it would likely mean their end.
「If you’re willing to take them in, that’d be a big help for us.」
And so, the Mitsume Wolves became the newest members of our household, officially taking on the role of guard dogs.
