Chapter 33 – Skilled Cabaret Girl Laudette-san

I must have lost my mind for a moment…

Wanting to repay Laudette-san for the comfort she had given me, I almost tried to order an expensive bottle of liquor. But of course, no such service existed here. After all, this was a holy church…

Treating a sacred church like a cabaret club, thinking back on it, that was absurdly blasphemous…

Ah, that’s right, this was a church. I actually had a request for the church.

「By the way, I’ve been practicing my ‘Woodworking’ skill by carving dolls…」

「Dolls, you say?」

「Yes, dolls of my mother」

「Of Miriam-san?」

「In large numbers」

「…………」

Uh oh, even Laudette-san looked a little put off.

No, it’s not like I wanted to casually bring up something like, “Lately my hobby is carving wooden dolls of my mother.” I really did just have a request.

「Well, it’s for practice. For the skill training, I only made one at first. But Mother was unexpectedly happy about it, and before I knew it, I was stuck making a bunch…」

「I-I see…」

At present, there were six dolls of Mother in my room. Letting that number grow any further would definitely be bad.

Carving them was fun, and lining them up to compare my progress and see how my skills had improved was also fun.

The problem was, at this rate, I’d soon have more than I could possibly line up.

「So that’s why I’d like to ask Laudette-san, or rather, the church….for some help」

「Help? With what exactly?」

「Could you take in Mother’s dolls?」

「Huh? The church would?」

「Yes. And… could you burn them?」

「Ha!? Why would we do that!」

Startled, Laudette-san nearly jumped out of her seat.

Huh? Did this world not offer that kind of service? I could have sworn my previous world did.

「You mean… that’s not a thing here?」

「Of course not! Why would we burn Miriam-san…」

Not Mother, her dolls.

「I see. I just thought I’d ask the church to offer a memorial service, since they’ve been piling up…」

「Sorry, but I don’t think I can be of much help thereee」

I see. Now what should I do… Maybe I should bundle them with Reversi sets and sell them off…

「Still, dolls of yourself, huh? That’s kind of niceee 」

「…Excuse me?」

「I mean, I’d be happy if someone made a doll of me toooo」

「Ah… I see. Well, maybe if the opportunity comes along…」

I gave a vague, noncommittal answer.

What was that? Did she just hint at wanting one again? Does she actually want it? Hmm…

No, this has to be one of those polite social remarks from the skilled cabaret girl Laudette-san. That must be it. If I took it seriously, I’d just embarrass myself.

A customer says, 『My hobby is making dolls』, and the cabaret girl replies, 『Ehh, I’d like one toooo』. That’s all.

If I actually went and carved a wooden doll modeled after her and brought it in, she’d be horrified.

「Ahh, sorry. We ended up talking for quite a while」

「Not at allll, I have free time toooo」

「Well then, shall we get to the appraisal now?」

「Yes, go aheaddd」

We really had wasted a lot of time chatting, but the main purpose was to check my status. I had to do it before I forgot. Otherwise, I might leave without it.

I’d already paid her, after all. If I left like this, it really would be nothing more than paying money just to have a chat, exactly like a cabaret club.

So, for the appraisal, I placed my hand on the crystal and sent in my magic power――

「…………」

「Nothing’s changed, huhhh. I’ve memorized these numbers alreadyyy」

Laudette-san was right. Ever since my first status check, I’d done this several times, but the only change had been in the job field.

From 『Apprentice Mage』 to 『Apprentice Woodworker』. Other than that, nothing. …Ah, and my age went up by one. Those were the only two changes.

I’ve been putting so much effort into woodworking, so I’d really like to see at least a boost in Dexterity or a level-up in the woodworking skill…

「Well… nothing I can do about it. I’ll come again」

「Okaaay. Good work todayyy」

I left the reception room and walked back through the church toward the exit. I glanced back, but as expected, there was no send-off.

Well, that’s fine. I felt like I’d gained some energy somehow. When I get home, I’ll work hard again… the same as always, making more Reversi sets.

And once I earn more money with Reversi, I’ll be back here to spend it again… Just like a cabaret club and its regular customer….
