Chapter 192 – Governance

Several days passed.

I finally finished reading through all the documents.

「Phew…」

I let out a breath in the archives room.

「As I thought… the biggest issue this country faces is its economy」

That was my conclusion.

After going through an overwhelming number of documents, it became clear the nation’s condition was worse than expected.

The economy was on the brink of collapse, and the treasury was far from abundant.

The country was in debt as well.

―――― Glaston and Lord Hydra had dominated the aristocracy.

They created a system where only their faction profited, bent the laws to their will, and monopolized various privileges.

Among all their misdeeds, the signing of unequal treaties with foreign nations was particularly disastrous.

(Just like Vais said, it seems Glaston and his lot made enormous profits in exchange for signing those unequal treaties)

In other words, they sold out the country just to line their own pockets.

They were traitors.

Though Glaston and Lord Hydra were now dead, the unequal treaties remained.

They were a negative legacy…and one that I would have to deal with.

「So, done digging through paperwork?」

When I returned to my room, Nordura was there.

I answered.

「Yeah. But now comes the next task. I have to formulate new policy proposals based on the documents」

Policies to rebuild the country.

They needed to be drawn up without delay.

「You’re working more than I expected. Didn’t you say you’d just dump everything on your subordinates once you became king?」

Nordura chuckled.

I replied.

「I said I’d do the bare minimum. And I ‘am’ dumping things」

I wasn’t handling any state affairs myself at the moment.

All of that had been entrusted to the female chancellor, Timeria.

She was apparently running around nonstop on my behalf.

「Can we really trust that chancellor nyaa? Wasn’t she part of Glaston’s government nyaa?」

As Vischy pointed out, Timeria had been one of Glaston’s aides.

Under normal circumstances, she’d be the first to get fired, and not someone you’d trust.

However…

(In the game, Timeria had only pretended to serve Glaston. Deep down, she was loyal to the country)

On the surface, she appeared to be one of Glaston’s followers, but behind the scenes, she had been working earnestly for the nation.

In other words, Timeria was one of the good ones.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say the country had avoided complete collapse thanks to people like her.

That’s why I had no intention of doubting her.

「She can be trusted. My instincts tell me so」

「Nyaa」

Vischy giggled at my vague word choice.

「…Well, if she does betray you, you can always crush her with brute force」

Nordura shrugged as she spoke.

「Solving everything with force isn’t elegant… but yeah, that’s the bottom line」

I nodded in agreement.
