The rain kept falling for four days and finally stopped on the fifth.
It felt like a break during the rainy season, but according to Kainzel-san, heavy rain like this would be followed by a stretch of clear weather of the same length, and the two would alternate several times.
It was a troublesome season, but complaining about nature would not help. I should use this clear spell to focus on goblin extermination.
「After the rain, goblins increase, so I’m counting on you」
That was what the village chief said when I greeted him.
It seemed goblins could not search for food during the rain, so they came close to the village and even attacked chickens and other small livestock.
I see. No wonder a few of them were scattered around the village.
「We will try to drag the goblins we kill out onto the roads. But if there are some deep in the fields, it would help if the villagers could take care of those」
「Of course. If it means fewer goblins, we will gladly take care of them. We have had more than enough trouble from those things」
I wanted to yell, “Do your job, lord!” but this was a kingdom ruled by nobles. Saying anything rude could get my head chopped off for disrespect(just an imagination). No one could speak carelessly.
「We will do our best to meet your expectations」
I told the village chief that and headed outside the village.
「Master! Hurry, let’s go!」
Since we were focusing on the fields owned by Lasagna Village today, I decided to bring Marg with us.
「I know. First we plan our strategy」
We had already talked through part of it, but important things should be said twice. I used my machete to draw a rough map of the area around Lasagna Village on the ground.
「Today we exterminate goblins so Kainzel-san can earn some money. Ladarion, you drive the goblins in from the northeast. Marg and I will come from the west. Kainzel-san, wait in this fallow field and take them out」
Both of them nodded in agreement. Marg nodded with a “hm hm” just from the atmosphere.
「Turn on your radios」
I had each of them switch on the business radios that allowed alternating communication.
In my original world you needed a license, but here there was no need to worry about that. There might be someone sending strange signals, but our radios could not receive anything like that, so it was not a problem.
In thirty years of life, the only thing I had ever used was a toy walkie-talkie, so learning how to operate these had been rough. But after four days I had somehow managed to figure it out.
I moved a short distance away and conducted test communications with the two. There were no issues, so we each headed to our positions.
「Marg. Once we start exterminating, I will not treat you like a child. I will treat you as a grown man. I will not listen to you complain」
「Yeah, I understand! I won’t cry!」
Back in my world, six was still a spoiled age, but children raised in a world ruled by the strong grew alert to danger and matured quickly.
He was no longer the runny-nosed brat I first met. His expression had sharpened. He did not look like a full-grown man, but he seemed two or three years older.
I sensed goblins on the way to our assigned spot, but I pretended not to notice and passed by them.
「This is 00. I have reached my position」
Since I held the parent unit, I was 00. Ladarion was 01. Kainzel-san was 02.
「01. I have reached my position」
「02. I have reached my position as well」
「Then I will begin the operation」
I took out a laser pointer and indicated where the goblins were hiding.
「Marg. Fire a mud pellet there」
「Got it!」
He readied his slingshot and shot a hardened mud pellet into the brush.
If it hit a human, it would probably send them straight to heaven, but this time the goal was to drive them out. I aimed the laser so he would miss.
I had him fire again and again to drive the goblins out.
「Marg, let’s go」
Since these fields belonged to a village of giants, the main paths were wide enough for giants to walk through. So while keeping enough distance to avoid being kicked aside by Marg, we drove the goblins forward.
「This is 00. I drove out more than twenty」
「01. I drove out a large number」
「01 acknowledged」
Staying in contact with Ladarion, we drove the goblins toward the fallow field where Kainzel waited.
「This is 02. I have detected goblin heat signatures. Number unknown. They are too packed together to count」
I was shocked that so many goblins were gathered, but it was just as shocking that there was enough food in the area to sustain them. If the goblins disappeared, something bad would probably happen.
「This is 02. They are within range. Beginning the attack」
「00 acknowledged. 01, stay out of 02’s firing range」
「01 acknowledged」
I had Kainzel-san carry the MINIMI and instructed him to switch to the Scorpion once he emptied the belt.
Gunfire erupted immediately, and the rewards began flowing in.
「02. Make sure no one approaches the area」
「02 acknowledged」
「Marg! If someone comes close, shout so they stay away!」
「Okay!」
I already told the village chief not to let anyone into the fields, but there was always someone who refused to listen. We could not kill them for getting in the way, so we had to be careful.
「This is 01. Goblins are escaping toward me」
「Exterminate them without hitting 02」
「01 acknowledged」
Ladarion was stationed by the forest. I expected the goblins to escape that way, so I equipped her with the Benelli M4 to eliminate any that slipped past.
The sound of the MINIMI shifted to the Scorpion, so I moved toward the fallow field.
「Marg! Aim for their legs!」
Some fled toward us, so I had Marg target their legs. I did the same so Kainzel-san could finish them.
We could not exterminate all of them, but it looked like we had taken down over three hundred thousand yen worth.
「Marg. Gather the goblins」
「Got it!」
I handed him tongs so he would not have to touch them directly. Now that he was Ladarion-sized, lifting goblins one to two meters tall was no issue.
He clamped down on the screeching goblins one after another and gathered about twenty.
「Well done, Marg. I will give you something special for lunch」
「Yay!」
He was still a child after all. But please stop jumping near me. It’s scary.
I called Kainzel-san over and had him finish them with the Scorpion.
Judging from the rewards, we had probably killed around one hundred fifty. Even after expenses, that was a decent morning income.
「Let’s clean up the goblins before lunch」
They would make good fertilizer for the fallow field.
