Chapter 238 – Battle of Milond Fortress

M32 grenade launcher.

I don’t know if that’s the official name, but that’s what it said in the gun magazine. So that’s what I’ll call it. Yes, decided.

「Why are military weapons so expensive?」

There’s a wide range, but the M32 grenade launcher varied from 250,000 to 480,000 yen.

Well, with a fifty percent off sticker, I can buy it for about the same as an assault rifle, but at full price there’s no way I’d buy it. Do they have any idea how much effort it takes to kill a hundred goblins? Even if I need it, I can’t just keep buying these things without thinking!

But right now, I can afford five of them (do you even count grenade launchers like that? Is it “units”? What is it?). No, I want to buy ten. But spending one million yen on M32 grenade launchers alone is my limit. I still need to replace the MINIMIs and P90s. Even if we win this fight, if I end up in the red, it’s basically a loss.

Two will go to Ladarion, one for me, one for Kainzel-san, and one as a spare. Just in case.

「Even the grenades are expensive. It’s painful」

Even so, since we have to face a large force, I bought eighty rounds. My stomach ached as I did.

After taking a recovery pill, I went outside, brought Ladarion with me, and entered Home.

I don’t know how to operate the M32 grenade launcher, so I figured it out together with Ladarion.

As expected, Ladarion has a talent for firearms. She understands faster than I do. Actually, I’m the one being taught here.

「Return to your normal form and bombard the goblins in front」

If she enlarges, it’s basically like a small artillery piece. Firing into dense groups should deal massive damage.

「Ladarion, take the twelve o’clock direction. I’ll handle three o’clock」

Nine o’clock is Bisha and Mebi. Six o’clock is Mishinie. The adventurers will support them.

「Should I have someone load P90 magazines?」

「There are people here. You should have them do it」

With that decided, I was led to one of the huts, where five young adventurers were loading magazines inside.

「Do this as well」

「How’s it outside?」

A man who looked like the leader, around twenty years old, asked Ladarion.

「Not much has changed. But we’re about to launch a counterattack, so hurry with the loading」

Until now, she had stayed behind me and avoided interacting with others, but now she was stepping forward actively. What happened?

「I’m Takato. I’m with Ladarion and Kainzel-san. If we survive, I’ll pay a special reward, so do your best」

「Are you Takato? I’ve heard about you from Ladarion.」

So she’s been interacting with others that much? Seriously, what happened?

「I hope she didn’t tell you anything pathetic. Being overestimated is a nuisance」

There was no time for idle talk, so I taught them how to load P90 magazines.

「I’m here to get G3 ammo!」

A boy, still young, rushed into the hut. A supply runner?

「It’s ready」

As soon as they handed him the bag filled with G3 magazines, he dashed back out.

As expected of someone who used to be a company commander. She’s good at directing people. I’d like her to direct me too.

「It’s getting dark. Are they attacking at night too?」

Goblins under command don’t care about day or night, but they’ve been surrounding the fortress for about four days. There’s no way they brought supplies, so they can’t keep up a twenty-four-hour assault.

「I think they’ll withdraw. They left watchers and pulled back at night」

Then I heard someone shouting.

「That’s the one leading them. When that happens, the goblins pull back, and Mokudan show up as watchers」

I went over to Mebi, borrowed her glasses, and scanned the surroundings. I could see heat signatures here and there that were likely Mokudan.

「…So they’re not letting us escape…?」

If their goal is to attack Koraus, they could just ignore Milond Fortress. Why are they so fixated on this place? Did they decide we’re the greater threat?

「Either way, they’ve got solid command」

So they have enough control to suppress even a frenzy. Can someone go call a hero? It’s your time to shine!

「Takato」

As I stood there feeling weighed down, Kainzel-san and Azur Rise arrived.

「Thank you. You held out well」

If it weren’t for Kainzel-san, we probably would have been wiped out.

「I knew Takato would come to support us. It wasn’t that difficult. We also had Ladarion and Azur Rise」

I was wondering where the Barrett went. So Azur Rise was using it. But he didn’t buy any ammo, did he?

「I’ve been using it. I bought the ammo myself」

「He’s got skill. He’s taken down six ogus」

Didn’t Azur Rise say he specialized in close combat with hand axes?

「The Barrett is good. Mind if I borrow it until I can buy one?」

「I don’t mind, but it costs around 1.3 million yen」

Even as a contractor, you’d need to kill around five hundred just to maintain that. I only managed to get one because I had a seventy percent off sticker.

「We’ll prepare the Barrett on our side, so buy a handgun instead. For someone like you, Azur Rise, a Desert Eagle would be a good fit」

With that Arnold-like Terminator build, anything less than a Desert Eagle probably wouldn’t satisfy him.

When I checked his contractor card, it showed 580,000 yen. Even after buying Barrett ammo, that meant he had taken down quite a number.

「Tomorrow might turn into a melee. Rather than the Barrett, it’s better to buy two Desert Eagles and about ten magazines. We’ll supply the ammo」

The only ones who can fight the Demon Army commander one-on-one are Azur Rise and Mishinie. In that case, it’s better to equip them with that in mind.

「Let’s have a meeting while we eat. Kainzel-san, please give instructions for the watch」

「Got it. Maiji, Atock, take watch duty!」

While Kainzel-san gave orders, I started preparing dinner.
