When I returned to the simple fort, the beastkin sisters had already come back.
「How did it go?」
「Neechan hunted them all! Isn’t that awful?!」
Mebi came over half in tears and clung to me.
「There, there. What a bad neechan. There are twenty over in that direction, so go exterminate them」
「Don’t let neechan come with me!」
The moment she said that, she dashed off at full speed. Haaah.
「Bisha, go scatter the processed meat. That’s your punishment for making your little sister cry. Buy it with your own money」
「Takato, you spoil Mebi too much」
「She’s still a child, so be kind to her」
Even if she was beastkin, having a ten-year-old girl exterminating goblins was hardly being soft on her. I couldn’t complain if someone called me cruel.
「I want to be spoiled too!」
What was this? A late baby phase? Could that still happen at fourteen?
「Alright, alright. There, there. Good girl, good girl」
Since I had no choice, I patted her head and rubbed her dog ears.
「I’m going to check on Mebi, so scatter the processed meat for me」
That seemed to satisfy her, and her tail was swishing happily. Her race was called Nyada, but in moments like this, she was more dog than cat. It reminded me of Kotaro, the mixed-breed dog I had when I was little.
Cheat Time only had one minute left, so I grabbed the spare P90 I had left behind and chased after Mebi.
She was slower than Bisha, but still far faster than me. The distance between us kept widening quickly. Still, it was only around five hundred meters away, so it did not take long.
「Takato, I beat them! There were twenty-two!」
「Did you take them down with a knife?」
I hadn’t heard any gunshots.
「Yeah! I can beat them with a knife too!」
What kind of slaughter girl was this child trying to become? I was worried about her future.
「It’s impressive that you can, but if you want to beat Bisha, challenge her with a gun. You have more talent with firearms than she does」
「I have talent with guns?」
「After only half a year of holding one, hitting targets from four hundred meters away can only be called genius. You’re also good at handling the P90」
I don’t know if having talent with guns is truly something to celebrate, but in a world with monsters like these, it could be called a blessing. To an ordinary person like me, it was something to envy.
「…I’m a genius with guns…」
「Well, even a genius who neglects effort can lose to an ordinary person who keeps working hard. Don’t be arrogant, don’t get complacent, and keep striving every day」
I should read her The Tortoise and the Hare sometime.
「I’ll do my best!」
「Oh, do your best, do your best」
The more goblins she exterminated, the better.
I brought the highly motivated Mebi back to the simple fort, and though it was a little early, we decided to have lunch.
When I returned the KLX to Home, the Wolverine was stored away, and Miriel and Ladarion were packing a huge amount of rolled omelets into stacked lunch boxes. W-What was going on here?
「Misaro is making a lot of them」
When I went to the central room, Misaro was standing at the stove mass-producing rolled omelets.
「M-Misaro, what happened? Why are you making so many rolled omelets?」
「Practice. I just can’t get them right no matter what」
No, they were already more than good enough. What was she dissatisfied with?
「I managed to make sweet rolled omelets, but I can’t make dashi-maki properly」
「I-I see. Practice is fine, but don’t overdo it」
I never expected Misaro to be this much of a perfectionist. Was she really functioning properly in the Demon King’s army?
「Yes. I feel like I’m just about to grasp it, so it’s fine」
I helped pack them into the stacked lunch boxes as well.
「Are we going to have to keep eating the same thing until Misaro is satisfied?」
「…If it comes to that, we’ll just move it all to the mansion dining hall. There are plenty of people who’ll eat it」
This time, we’d let Maizel eat them. Of course, we would eat them too. It was only right, since I was the one who taught her how to make rolled omelets.
「Ladarion. How are tomorrow’s preparations going?」
「Late because putting in eggs」
Yeah, figures. That was a foolish question.
「We’ll head back after lunch」
Once we packed everything into the stacked lunch boxes, we loaded them onto the Wolverine and went outside.
Praying sincerely that Misaro would master it by today, we all ate rolled omelets together.
「Takato. I want to drive the Wolverine too」
That was what Mebi said, so I let her get in the driver’s seat.
Mebi was just under one hundred forty centimeters tall. After moving the seat all the way forward, it looked like she could barely manage to drive.
「Won’t your tail get in the way?」
The beastkin sisters had fluffy tails growing from their backsides. When riding the Pioneer, they sat on only about half the seat. Their tails took up more space than expected.
「It might be a little in the way」
Hmm. I couldn’t exactly cut a hole in the seat. Ah, maybe stacking two U-shaped cushions would work.
I had Mebi buy two U-shaped cushions and placed them between the backrest and her body.
「How’s your tail now?」
「It feels a little ticklish, but it doesn’t hurt」
So with that settled, I let her try driving.
She must have been watching how it was done. With only one explanation, she started the engine, shifted from neutral to drive, and got the vehicle moving.
「Take it slow until you get used to it」
「Yeah. Got it」
Mebi did not seem nervous, so she was not putting in unnecessary force, and she drove at around twenty kilometers per hour.
「Yeah, nice job, nice job. You might have talent not just for guns, but for driving too」
If someone could drive this well on their first try, that had to be talent.
「Bisha, want to try driving too?」
I asked Bisha, who was riding in the cargo bed. I thought she might feel like her dignity as the older sister was at stake if her younger sister could do it and she could not, but she did not seem bothered at all.
「I don’t care. I prefer to run on my own legs.」
With that, she jumped down from the cargo bed and ran ahead.
Even as sisters, their personalities were complete opposites.
