Still, reporting I failed feels awkward.
Should I talk to Chicken first and ask her to intercede or should I go report it alone……
「Candy in bread is pretty good too. Digo,, you should try some.」
「Eh? Ah, then……for later study……」
No longer in the mood to say anything to Mince-san, I stare blankly at their backs.
Digo dipped a piece of bread in the pan a bit before tossing it to his mouth. He seemed to be chewing hard.
「Ah, it’s surprisingly delicious. The more you chew, the more the sweetness comes out from the inside.」
「The more you chew the more……you…..know you’re not supposed to chew candy.」
I used to love chewing candy as a kid and my mom used to get mad at me for chipping my teeth.
However, for some reason, I loved the feeling of the finely ground candy melting all at once.
Nowadays, no matter how much my teeth chip, someone will fix it so I can chew as much candy as I want……
……Hnn?
Chew?
I got up from my chair and picked up an old piece of bread.
「Oh? Seele wants to give it a try too? Hey, I just thought, this is not a licking candy but a drinking candy……」
I dip the candy a bit and bit into it.
The old, hardened bread is chewy and the more you chew, the sweeter it gets from the inside……
Ah……
「Eureka!」
「You can drink it as it is, but it might be surprisingly delicious if this candy is mixed with ginger water……」
「Mince-san! Shut up and leave!」
I kicked Mince-san out of the kitchen and with a ladle, I scooped up candy and began furiously kneading flour and water in a bowl.
Yeah, we can make chewy candy.
Not the one you’ll lick or dissolve but a chewy one where you can enjoy both texture and sweetness.
If the candy doesn’t harden by itself, we can just knead it into something chewy.
「Are you kneading udon?」
「No」
I had an idea about something chewy.
When I was making udon at the request of master in the past, I had once tried to wash the udon dough that I had carelessly dropped on the floor with water to see if it could be washed off.
However, most of it dissolved and disappeared when I rinsed it under running water, leaving something sticky, squishy, and stretchy substance on my hand.
It didn’t taste anything when I tried tasting it and the texture was so unbearable that I had forgotten about it until now……
I thought if I kneaded some flavor into the sticky gummy substance, I could enjoy it as a different kind of candy.
I don’t know if that would satisfy master though.
However, it seemed much better than raising the white flag without any result.
「Alright!」
「………」
As I finished kneading, my eyes fell on the pot next to me.
I turned my head in that direction and my eyes met those of Digo, who was stirring sauce and staring at me.
「Ah, I was in the middle of teaching you how to cook hayashi rice……」
「No, all is well given that master’s research progressed.」
I’m sorry for leaving you alone……
Making cady is my job but……so does teaching you.
After I had covered the dough and washed my hand, I looked into Digo’s pot.
Yeah, it didn’t burn. Even though he was away from the pot halfway. He must have been adjusting the heat properly.
「I’m sorry, Dito. I was so distraught earlier.」
「No……I’m relieved to know that not only me but master is also moving forward even though you look so worried.」
I was about to respond “I’m always worried about things” but didn’t……
As a single woman, yes……
I can’t say that since I am the Schenker’s executive chef and Digo’s mentor.
「……well, sometimes.」
I said that and laughed, then gave him a wink to cover up my unreliability.
Digo looked at me dumbfounded. Is he dumbfounded because his mentor is unreliable?
「You’ve boiled it that much. That’s enough. Remember today’s procedure. The sauce is the most important thing in hayashi rice because it will be the one who’ll dictate the taste.」
「Yes!」
