Before dawn, I woke with the urge to pee and headed for the toilet.
It was still pitch dark outside, but I wasn’t scared. After all, I’m already five years old… though I guess my age here doesn’t really matter.
Actually, I don’t even feel like it’s that dark. For some reason, my night vision is unusually good. My eyesight in general seems amazing.
So I walked easily through the darkness and reached the toilet.
It’s a simple pit latrine with just a hole dug into the ground, but… it’s also surprisingly fitting for another world.
Inside the hole lives a slime. This slime apparently eats all human waste.
When Mother first told me, I was shocked. I almost rushed straight into the toilet, and she grabbed me from behind in a panic. She thought I was about to jump in.
Not that slimes are considered dangerous monsters. They move very slowly and generally try to escape from threats. Also, Mother once said,
『Even if a slime tried to dissolve you completely, Alec, it would take two weeks, so you’d be fine』
Honestly, that made me more scared.
Should I have said something like 『Yay. Even after a week, half of me would still be left!』? Not that it matters, being half-dissolved would still kill me.
「Thanks as always, Slakichi」
Anyway, I offered my thanks to the household slime, quietly working out of sight, as I relieved myself.
Not that I know if it appreciates the gratitude.
If it were me, I wouldn’t want to be caught and forced to live eating only waste…
When I think about it like that, maybe saying “thank you” here is just human ego.
Still, knowing that food will come to it eventually, the slime never leaves.
So maybe this is a mutually beneficial relationship, a nice little case of coexistence.
Lost in those thoughts, I finished and headed back to my room.
Now that I’m five, I have my own room and sleep alone.
Just as I was about to climb back into bed, I noticed something strange.
「What’s this?」
By my pillow sat a palm-sized brown object.
What is this? Animal fur? A plant? …No, I think I’ve seen this before. If I remember right, this is…..
「I remember!」
This is… a scrubbing brush.
Two faces of goddesses flashed through my mind. Ah, Mikoto-san, Deis-san…
That’s right, it was through the power of those two goddesses that I was reincarnated in this world. I had completely forgotten about them… and the mission they entrusted to me!
What on earth have I been doing all this time!!
Shocked, but still drowsy since it was the middle of the night, I crawled back under the covers and fell asleep…
◇
「There was no mission in the first place」
Was I half-asleep or something?
Come to think of it, Deis-san did go on and on about harems, but was that supposed to be the mission from the goddess? …Not that I’m aiming for that.
Still… it’s true I’ve forgotten a lot.
Right before my reincarnation, I was all fired up thinking, 『I’ll reach level 5 or die trying, then spin the cheat roulette!』 And when I actually pulled the scrubbing brush, I remember despairing like, 『I’m going to get eaten by a dragon!』
「But after actually reincarnating, it turned out the world was more peaceful than I expected…」
I can’t say what it’s like outside the village, but at least here it’s safe, and I’m well protected by my parents.
As a result, I’ve only been living as an ordinary child.
Sure, I’ve been circulating my magic power around my body every day, but honestly, it’s felt more like spinning a pen, just something to kill time.
As someone who reincarnated into another world, is this really okay…?
「Well, more importantly… this」
I picked up the scrubbing brush from my pillow.
Finding something by your pillow after you sleep feels like a Christmas present from Santa.
If an actual Christmas present turned out to be a scrubbing brush, though, most kids would blow a fuse… and probably end up hating Christmas for life.
「What should I do with this scrubbing brush…」
Maybe I should just give it to my parents? They could use it for washing something.
…But isn’t this brush actually some kind of advanced technology? Would that be okay?
「Maybe I should just be honest and say it’s from a god…?」
Yeah, that’s right. I might get more stuff from the cheat roulette in the future, so I should just say it upfront.
Alright, once breakfast is over, I’ll hand it over.
◇
So, breakfast with the three of us.
Today’s menu: rye bread, meat-and-vegetable soup, and apples for dessert.
Pretty solid menu, right? And tasty, too. The vegetables are cabbage and onions, and the meat is apparently from some monster.
Come to think of it, the names are the same as in my previous life. In both worlds, an apple is an “apple”. Strange, isn’t it?
…Or maybe Deis-san messed with my brain so it ‘sounds’ like “apple” to me…?
Actually, this is really late to be thinking about it, but despite being in another world, everyone sounds like they’re speaking Japanese, and I’m speaking Japanese too. How does that work? Is this also Deis-san’s doing…?
「Alec, you’re such a good boy for eating everything properly」
「Yeah」
Just as I was thinking something kind of creepy, Father praised me for my eating habits.
My father is a hunter. Despite his slim, handsome looks, he apparently swings a sword around in the forest, hunting monsters.
The mystery meat in this soup is from something he hunted, and after breakfast, he’ll be heading out to hunt again today.
As I ate, I offered silent thanks to my father, to the ingredients that would become my flesh and blood, and, since I’d recently remembered them, to the goddesses as well.
I’m still growing, after all. I need to eat a lot.
「Eat plenty and grow up to be a fine elf」
「Yeah…. pffft!」
「Hey, Alec! …Alec? What’s wrong?」
With that casual, shocking remark, I spat out the soup I had just been gratefully drinking.
Mom scolded me for the mess, but seeing my unusual reaction, she quickly switched to a look of concern.
…Wait. I’m an ‘elf’?
