V10 Chapter 8 – Resting in Einzheil: Golden Moi and the Orphanage

The number of Golden Moi you can buy in the general line is two per person.

Thinking about getting some for the family early in the morning makes it feel a little lacking, but since you’re guaranteed to buy them, the line was quite long, and I finally managed to get some.

While I was at it, I also made a reservation for next year.

「So, this is a Golden Moi…」

It looks like an ordinary sweet potato.

Well, as usual, there are marks that look like where legs used to be.

Since it’s called Golden, the inside is probably a potato that shines like gold.

「My liege, you bought them?」

「Yeah. Good work, Aina.」

Aina came toward me with both hands full of delicious-looking Golden Moi, so I put all of them into the magic bag (lesser) and walked beside her.

「It was a huge amount though. Is it really alright? Won’t people complain that we took too many?」

「It’s certainly a lot, but it’s not too much. Everyone was looking forward to it. If I took too many, it would be sad for them, right?」

When Aina directed my attention around us, the adventurers who only got the participation prize were looking frustrated among their companions, yet still laughing and having fun.

In the end they were sharing them, so I guess they were just enjoying the event itself.

「Alright, shall we head home and start getting things ready to eat?」

「Yeah. By the way, how do you eat Golden Moi?」

「You either roast or steam them, but we usually roast them.」

「Over a campfire? Or stone-roast? There’s also pot roasting.」

「Your world has that many ways to roast them… We usually stick them on an iron skewer and cook them over a campfire if we’re eating them as they are. But they often burn or end up undercooked…」

Even if we make a campfire, there’s no aluminum foil…

If we do stone-roasting, would regular stones work?

They needed to be stones that won’t crack under heat, round and light… Was that right?

Something about far infrared radiation or whatever, but I don’t really remember…

Roast-in-a-pot… I saw it once at a shop.

If you have a pot that doesn’t crack easily and some charcoal, it should work.

Hmm. If we’re worried about burning them, pot-baking might be the best option…

「Ah, nii-chan!」

「Hm? Oh, hey. Long time no see.」

The ones calling out were six children from the orphanage.

All of them were holding two Golden Moi in their hands.

「Good morning, onii-chan! And Aina-onee-chan too!」

「Yeah. Good morning, everyone.」

「You two bought Golden Moi too?」

「Yeah. It’s my first time, so today was the only day I could get some.」

「I see, I see. We couldn’t eat any last year because we didn’t have money, but this year we’ve got some income thanks to the okonomiyaki you taught us. So, Mother said we could buy a little!」

The children held up their Golden Moi proudly, showing them off.

It seems the okonomiyaki business was doing well, and they were also improving things like their facilities, clothing, and daily necessities.

But they still probably couldn’t afford luxuries like this very often.

There are a lot of children, and the support money from the country is small.

Aina and the others donate, but kids grow fast, so even if things are reused, there’s always something they need.

So, the six Golden Moi they bought this time were probably barely within their budget…

「My liege…」

「Yeah. I know.」

I understood what Aina wanted to say.

She was asking whether we should share some of ours with them.

Well, we only needed enough for the two of us anyway.

「Hey, Aina took part in the Moi digging and we’ve got quite a lot. Want a few?」

「Nii-chan… thank you! You thought we might not have enough, right? But we’re fine!」

「Hm? Why’s that?」

「These are for Mother and the Sisters who take care of us every day! We wanted to do something for them with the money we earned, so we’ve been planning this for a while. Ah, it’s a secret, so don’t tell anyone, okay?」

「You guys…」

「…You’re doing something pretty cool.」

The children looked bashful, grinning shyly.

They’re growing up well…

「Well, we’re getting another special meal today anyway! We’ll eat that, and we’ve already reserved for next year, so we’ll look forward to Golden Moi then!」

「Listen, listen! A very important Sister from the capital is coming! And she’s going to cook for us!」

「I see… that sounds like something to look forward to.」

「Yeah! She’s also going to tell us some amazing stories! I probably won’t understand the hard stuff though!」

「Studying is important, alright? No matter what you want to be.」

「「「「「「Okaaay!」」」」」」

An important Sister from the capital telling an amazing story, huh.

Not a Bishop or a Priest, but an important Sister…

There’s only one person that comes to mind.

「Huh? Isn’t that master-san! Wow, what a coincidence!」

「No. Not you.」

Vice-captain.

You were not the one I had in mind.

「So cruel right from the start!? What is it!? Is it because my slit isn’t cut all the way up today!? Do I have to go without underwear for you to be satisfied!? Obviously not, there are children here!」

「Do not say things that are bad for their education. Do not influence them in the wrong way.」

「Wrong influence!?」

Talking about slits and going without underwear in front of children… it is nothing ‘but’ a bad influence.

Look at that poor boy in the middle of puberty.

Because you keep talking about slits and underwear, he keeps glancing at your lower half in confusion.

And even though you have impressive breasts, he isn’t even looking at them. Vice-captain, how unfortunate…

「Vice-captain… stop messing arou…. oh. Been a while, hasn’t it masu?」

「Teresa. Yeah. I knew it.」

「W-what exactly do you mean by that masu?」

「No, nothing. I’m just glad I ran into you, Teresa!」

An important Sister from the capital… that means Teresa the Saintess.

There was a chance it could have been a different Saintess that I didn’t know, but since the vice-captain was here… yeah.

Good. I’m glad it’s her.

「T-this is strange… the difference in how you treat the Captain and me is strange!」

「Ha. What are you saying masu… master-san, forgive me, but I am working today, so I must go. I will be in Einzheil for a while, so I will visit you another day masu.」

「Ah, you mean that work? The amazing story you’re going to tell at the orphanage…」

「Amazing story… that is quite the vague description masu. I am only going to speak about the gods of this world as taught by the church masu.」

Oh, the gods. That would be the goddess, Reidianna-sama.

And the goddess of war, Atros-sama, I think? The one with the small chest…

So, it’s a story about Reidianna-sama… I’m kind of curious.

「…Hey, can I listen too?」

「I do not mind… but first we must prepare the food for the children masu.」

「Yeah. I’ll help with that. Aina, is that alright?」

「Very well. Leave the fire to me.」

「Then let us go masu. Children, do not get separated and follow properly masu.」

The children answered with a lively yes and followed after Teresa.

Teresa watched over them and matched their pace, while Aina walked among the children and looked after them.

I walked behind them with the vice-captain.

「So, what were you doing so early in the morning?」

「We were helping with treatment at the aid station for the Golden Moi harvest. More importantly, master-san, master-san. Have you become interested in the church?」

「Well, Reidianna-sama has taken care of me and I thought I should learn more.」

「Ah, that makes sense. You are a Drifter. I am so jealous… being able to meet Reidianna-sama.」

「…Vice-captain, you are more devout than I expected.」

From her usual behavior, she did not seem like a devoted believer at all.

「What do you mean more than expected… I am normally quite devout. Otherwise I would not be able to become vice-captain of the Priestess Order.」

「You need to be devout to join?」

「Of course. The Priestess Order require strength, divinity and knowledge. There is a written test too. You cannot join unless you know more about the goddess. Which means the Priestess Order are elite. And since I am the elite who is the Number Two, I am even more elite.」

Wow… why do I suddenly feel uneasy about the Priestess Order…

「Well, compared to the captain I am nothing. The captain is amazing. She is strong, carries divinity close to that of a Drifter, her divine power is at a Saintess’s level, she worships Reidianna-sama deeply and she got full marks on the written test.」

「Oh…」

「The captain thinks we do not know, but she never misses her morning purification and prayer. Inside the church she is the most faithful and beloved by the believers. Whoever becomes the next captain… honestly it would be cruel to compare them.」

「Huh? Didn’t you want to be the next captain?」

「Of course that was a joke. If the captain were gone, I would retire immediately. Why are you grinning… wait. Did you notice? I only forgot to put it on because I was half-asleep today. It is not a hobby!」

The vice-captain hurriedly covered her breasts that bounced with every step.

I had already noticed she was not wearing a bra, and I had just been impressed by her seriousness…

「Sigh…」

「What is that sigh supposed to mean…? Are you sighing because my breasts stopped bouncing after I covered them?」

「No… though that is disappointing. I meant the vice-captain herself is disappointing.」

「Of all people, I do not want to hear that from master-san who has the most disappointing thoughts!」

Oh, she said it.

So, which one of us has the more disappointing thoughts?

Fine. I will ask Teresa and Aina later.

The verdict… a draw.

A shocking draw.

I thought I would win easily, but apparently my thoughts were more disappointing than expected.

They said my gaze was obvious and my thoughts were easy to read…

My eyes just wander on their own, but women really are strict about where you look…
