The tear-gas round shot out with a shupoon!
It arced downward and landed fifty meters ahead. It popped with a crack and released smoke.
「It looks kind of weak」
But the goblins there writhed in agony and screamed. It looked worse than dying.
Since it worked, I kept firing tear-gas rounds one after another.
After ten shots, we moved. After another ten, we moved again. We repeated that until all the rounds were spent.
「Ugh. Some drifted this way」
Even through the gas mask the sharp smell leaked in. Breathing that directly would be hell. This had to be a completely inhumane weapon.
Well, the enemy was goblins, so I did not feel the slightest bit of guilt, but it was definitely something that required careful use.
I climbed a little, drew the machete from my back, and stabbed it into the throats of the limp goblins.
It was just stabbing, but it was heavy work. A spear would be easier.
After thirty of them, it became annoying. I wanted to switch to my Glock, but it would not look good if I did it first in front of Ladarion. Please, Ladarion. Give up before I do.
Maybe my wish got through, because she said, 「Takato, I’m tired!」 Good timing, Ladarion. I believed in you.
「Go ahead and shoot them with the SCAR!」
I will use the VHS-2 too. I answered her only in my mind, and as I kept finishing them, that announcement played again.
── Ping! Congratulations on surpassing seven thousand kills! You can draw twice in the lottery!
I do not need that announcement! Use the Tablet for that! Damn it!
「Ladarion! Let’s take a break!」
That useless goddess killed the mood. Might as well resupply and rest.
We returned to the Sefuti Home, restocked magazines and bought more tear-gas rounds, then after about twenty minutes stepped back outside.
「The goblins ran off」
What remained were only the few hundred still in agony from the tear gas. Now then. How should we deal with this…
It was probably under three hundred, but finishing them one by one sounded miserable.
「Ladarion. Let’s practice with the tear-gas rounds for now」
If we kept firing that many shots, they would suffocate and die.
By the time we used up all the tear gas rounds we bought, it was already noon, and some goblins had started dying from respiratory failure.
I turned on the radio and tried calling Kainzel-san. I wonder if he’s there.
『This is 02. Are you finished?』
He answered right away. Had he been waiting the whole time?
『It will take a little longer. Please have lunch and take your time to rest before coming here. Ah, and don’t forget your gas mask.』
『Understood.』
There was no chance the goblins would gather again, so meeting up should be fine.
We went back to the Sefuti Home, took off our gear and had lunch.
I warned Ladarion not to overeat, and I kept myself to eighty percent full. But at least let me have one can of beer. Kaah. So good.
After resting for about an hour and a half, I switched my equipment to the Benelli M4. I would have Ladarion return to her original form and finish them off.
When we stepped outside, a large amount of reward money came in all at once. Tear gas rounds might as well be classified as inhumane weapons. Though goblins don’t count as people, so they’re exempt.
While we were finishing off the surviving goblins, Kainzel-san arrived.
「You killed an incredible number of them.」
「If we had more funds, we could have killed even more.」
Grant me a generous budget, time and manpower.
「I’m sorry to ask as soon as I got here, but please help finish off the survivors. There are too many, and I don’t think I can get through them.」
I thought there were fewer than three hundred, but some were unconscious under the ones screaming in agony. I never imagined their presence would weaken once they lost consciousness. When they sleep, their presence doesn’t change at all.
Since we couldn’t tell if they would die on their own, we had no choice but to finish them off just in case. Even so, my wrist was starting to hurt from the recoil of the Benelli M4.
「Makes you want to just douse everything in gasoline and burn it.」
I wasn’t going to do that, though. It would turn into something insane.
By evening, their presence finally disappeared. I really didn’t want to pull the trigger anymore.
When the adrenaline was pumping, I could do it, but having to pull the trigger hundreds of times when it wasn’t was torture. It felt like my mind was going to break.
「It’s getting dark, so let’s move back a bit.」
Camping in a place like this felt awful. We decided to move two or three kilometers away, heading upstream, but there were still goblin corpses scattered around. There were too many bodies and cleanup hadn’t caught up.
「From here, would the town of Misrim be closer?」
「No, the bridge becomes unusable at night. We should return to Lasagna Village.」
The bridge was blocked off with a fence at night, and the manager stayed on the other side.
Well, once we reached the road, it wouldn’t take even thirty minutes to get back to Lasagna Village. It wasn’t far, so we decided to return there.
「…A pretty impressive house has gone up already…」
Even though only two days had passed, a stone house was already built.
Inside, it was about twelve tatami in size, with a hearth, a fireplace and a bed.
「I feel kind of bad. Maybe we should give him some alcohol as thanks.」
「I can prepare that on my end. More importantly, shall we make it more comfortable to live in?」
There was no gas, water, electricity or bedding. At the very least, we should make it comfortable enough for proper sleep.
「No, bringing things over from the shed will be enough. I can handle the rest myself. I was bored yesterday and looked at the Contractor Card. There were a lot of things I wanted, so I’d like to buy some right away.」
Well, if Kainzel-san said so, we could leave it to him.
「Then please sleep in tomorrow. We’ll leave before noon.」
「Yeah. Understood.」
We headed home and each returned to our respective Sefuti Homes.
