Chapter 138 – Sudden Turn After Sudden Turn

When I got outside, fires were blazing, and I could see a beast spreading enormous wings.

Another dangerous thing just had to show up. I am a goblin exterminator, so stay out of this!

「This way!」

The Pioneer was still parked where I had left it, and my guns were being kept inside the stable.

「Please use this to keep the wazur at bay. I do not know how strong it is, but with this light, it should hesitate」

He handed the military LED light to the soldier who had guided me and explained how to use it.

「Keep your distance from the wazur, and do not push yourself」

「U-understood」

The soldier ran off, and I put on my equipment.

Since I had gone into the city, I had brought the MP9 with me, but the Pioneer was carrying the H Sniper and the VHS-2. I had no idea how effective they would be against a wazur, but I did not need to fight it head on. Supporting fire would be enough.

I slung the VHS-2 over my back and carried the H Sniper out of the stable.

I spotted stairs leading up to the second floor of the castle from outside. I ran up the stairs, took a position where I could look down on the wazur, unfolded the bipod, and set up the H Sniper.

With the light being shone by the soldier from earlier, I could clearly see the wazur.

「A griffin, huh」

Well, I do not know the exact appearance of a griffin, but it had the face of a hawk, the limbs of a beast, huge wings, and a whip-like tail. It felt like something made up on the spot. Yet it was toying with well-trained soldiers and spewing fireballs from its mouth. Creating something so troublesome despite being so slapdash. What a pain that lousy goddess is.

「Eat a two hundred fifty yen per shot armor piercing round」

I pulled the trigger of the H Sniper.

The round hit the joint of the wazur’s front leg. As it staggered, I fired another shot. When it fell, I followed up with three more. And it still did not die. It seems to have more vitality than Mokudan.

Still, it was not completely ineffective. I switched to rapid fire and poured the rest into it.

Leaving the H Sniper there, I raised the VHS-2 and ran toward the wazur.

「Do not stand in front of it! Attack from the rear!」

The Guild Master seemed to be directing the fight, ordering the soldiers so they would not face the wazur head on.

I climbed a nearby tree so as not to get in the soldiers’ way.

From the high ground, I pulled the trigger and fired at the wazur.

As expected, cheap ammo felt like it was being stopped by the wazur’s hide. But it seemed effective against the wings, so I kept aiming there to prevent it from flying away.

I burned through five magazines, one hundred fifty rounds, in under three minutes, yet the wazur was still moving. How much life does this thing have?

I climbed down from the tree, called in more magazines, stowed them in my pouches, and headed toward the Guild Master.

「Guild Master!」

「Takato, keep attacking its legs! The wazur has a high regeneration rate!」

「Roger!」

High vitality and high regeneration. Was this thing really made so carelessly? Anyone would think it was created to wipe out humanity!

It flapped its wings to keep us at bay, but it no longer seemed energetic enough to spit fireballs. I kept firing at the legs it was bracing on.

「Gyaaaah!」

Thanks to the soldiers’ efforts, the wazur let out its final death scream and collapsed to the ground.

After a brief moment of silence, cheers erupted. Whew. We managed to take it down.

Even so, I reminded myself not to let my guard down until the very end. When I called in more magazines, I noticed a piece of paper stuck to one of them. What is this? Some kind of mark?

But Miriel had never done anything like this, and the paper was covered in a long message. I had a bad feeling about it.

「Guild Master, sorry. Do you know what this says?」

The Guild Master had moved a short distance away, perhaps no longer directing the soldiers. I asked him what was written on the paper.

「Takato, please come back immediately. Ladarion and the others are surrounded by several thousand goblins. What in the world is this──」

Before I could hear his answer, I returned to Home.

「Miriel! What happened!?」

「It seems a Goblin King has appeared. Right now, they have built a stronghold on the mountain summit」

A king? Does one really appear that easily?

「Did they take food and ammunition with them?」

「Yes. They asked for more Minimi ammo」

I checked the shelves and saw that all the Minimi box magazines were gone. Even my share had been taken.

The P90 and Benelli M4 were gone too, along with most of the ammo. It had all been taken, as if for an all-out war.

If a king had risen, their numbers must be enormous. I bought ten more box magazines and three spare barrels. While I was at it, I bought a pallet of 5.56mm magazines. Of course, I used the seventy percent discount seal.

I also bought grenade launcher rounds, hand grenades, smoke grenades, and fire extinguishers.

「Miriel, it’s dark now, but go to Gorg’s place and wake him up. Bring Gorg with us」

I would like to have them move ahead, but with a king present, splitting up would be a bad move. More importantly, if they do not clear the way, I will die halfway there on my own!

「Tell them that once Ladarion gets back, we will head out too, so they need to hold on. Also tell them to keep their communicators turned on」

「Understood. Please do not push yourself」

「Yeah. I won’t」

I gently tapped Miriel on the shoulder, stuffed the magazines into my rucksack, grabbed the VHS-2 with an attached grenade launcher, and headed outside.
